(not the greatest translation..)

or this:

Marlow ceased, and sat apart, indistinct and silent, in the pose of a meditating Buddha. Nobody moved for a time.
"We have lost the first of the ebb," said the Director, suddenly. I raised my head. The offing was barred by a black bank of clouds, and the tranquil waterway leading to the uttermost ends of the earth flowed sombre under an overcast sky - seemed to lead into the heart of an immense darkness.

The top one is Dante's Inferno, am I right?
And the bottom one is from Joseph Conrad's Heart(s?) of Darkness.
Both so amazing! Don't know the other one though???????

AAAAaaaaaarrrrggggghhhh! I KNEW I recognised that! Couldn't think where from! Haven't read it for years, I don't have a copy.

I'll give a clue about my unidentified quote: the young woman in the quote lived at the same time as Helen.

Heh heh...(filled with pride)...will try to provide 2.

--------------------no.#1)
-We tend to become like the worst in those we oppose.
-Laws to suppress tend to strengthen what they would prohibit. This is
the fine point on which all the legal professions of history have based
their job security.
-Do not be quick to reveal judgment. Hidden judgment often is more potent.
It can guide reactions whose effects are felt only when too late to divert them.
--------------------no.#2)
-If you really want to hear about it, the first thing
you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and
what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents
were occupied and all before they had me, and all
that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel
like going into it, if you want to know the truth.
-------------------
The first one is from a series written between 1965 to 1985. Make it easy:
Just name the series for a correct answer.
The other was written in or around the 1950's.
Good Luck!

Um. Not sure of this, long time since I read it, but is it from DUNE? And wasn't the author quoting from something else? Can't remember the author..
