I've been wondering where thats from for the past year. My Political Science lecturer from last year was called Mads Qvortrup and I had never encountered the name before. He's Canadian, so I was really struggling to work out where the name might have originated. And just to make it even harder the man has a completely unrecognisable accent due to years of living in French Canada and then Britain. The two accents just don't seem to gel all that well...

As opposed to Germany where it is illigal to use the name Osama. (A trial is currently underway to determine the legality of the ban.)

So - what do you think of this way of showing your sympathies - and is it fundamentaly different to naming your child after another (in)famous person?

P.S. the most popular names are Mads and Sofie
That is just plain.... odd..

Osama is a very common name that a lot of people like. So what if people use it, it's just a name.

My brother is called Peter. He has nothing whatsoever to do with Peter Sutcliffe, more famously known as the Yorkshire Ripper. He was given my dad's middle name as a first name.

This is a common trend in both atheist, christian, *and* muslim families - to name a son after another member of the family. I bet there are loads of babies named Osama after respected male relatives, just because someone infamous also has that name may not actually mean a lot.

and BTW to my knowledge the people in germany wanted to name their son Osama Bin Laden, not just Osama, and naming your son that full name is illegal there, which I still think is ridiculous, though definitely different.

Well if nameing your children "Osama bin Laden" is illegal , what happens if that is already your name?? What if "binLaden" is a common last name for the middle east, kind of like smith or jones. Would they make you change it when you move to Germany or perhaps just give you a fine?
