This was so weird, I just thought I would share it with all of you.

We currently have a Japanese foreign exchange student going to my small school. She is very nice and I talk to her quite a bit.
Yesterday, she kept going on and on about how she saw a rainbow and even took a picture of it to show to her friends when she returned to Japan. Puzzled, I was like, "You've never seen a rainbow before?" and she said, "Oh, no! I thought they weren't real...like a fairy tale, but I saw this one and couldn't believe it! I had to ask someone if it was real!"

Maybe this isn't as big of a thing as I thought, but it didn't surprise me so much that she hadn't seen a rainbow (she lives in downtown Tokyo), but she didn't even think they were real!

She's also told me she's never seen lightning before (she can't wait until the next thunderstorm) and she took a picture of a full moon here once to send to her brother because they never see one.

Surprising what we take for granted...

I actually read the other day that some students in New York City were shown pictures of the starry sky. And they didn't believe it was real, they thought it was computer generated, because with all the lights you can't see stars. Don't know how true it was, but it doesn't sound that far-fetched, even knowing how hard it is to see stars where I live in the suburbs of a not very big city

Yes, it's surprising the misconceptions that exist. I saw a study of a group of gang members in Los Angeles who were very angry because they thought that Caucasians were a small minority in this country, because they saw so few. They thought that the whole U.S.A., from Maine to California all looked like Compton. Shown pictures of the Mojave Desert and the Plains, they didn't believe that they existed.

Some kids in London have never seen the sea! I mean we live on an island, it's only 50 miles to the sea from here. Some people are just so insular.

Wow, now that is just insanely absurd! What's this world coming too? Call me weird, but I gripe and complain when I go somewhere away from home and have to buy bottled water. Really that's insane if you think about it...

Gotta tell this story on my brother-in-law the smart-alec. We were on a family vacation in the Big Bend, a mountainous desert in Far West Texas, when we stopped at one of those combination filling station/convenience stores, and he went in while Attalus was filling the tank. He bought a bottle of water, and, when told that it would be $2.00, he said, "I can't believe that water is $2 a bottle here." and the dried-out, deeply tanned desert woman behind the counter said with a straight face, "Yeah, I can't believe that you tourists pay that." I laughed so hard that I think that I seperated a rib.

It's not about paying attention Deathkiller - the lights from large cities make features in the sky invisible - I have to go out into the country to see stars, you just can't see them in London. If you'd lived your whole life here, you'd never have seen a star
