The classic is a elven Fighter/Mage/Thief

but you might want to get an expirience cap remover, if you do go solo.

Either go for a Kensai/Mage, a Monk or a Sorcerer; I think the easiest characters to solo with in BG2, especially with an experience cap remover. They will all have their difficulties early on in the game, but once you've gone past a certain point, you'll have an unstoppable killing machine at your disposal. Though if you want to keep it somewhat of a challenge, don't install the experience cap remover at all.

the monk doesnt have many problems even in the early stage of the game. hes a bit too overpowered.

There's no problem with a Thief - with any solo you have to "play" the character. A thief wouldn't run into a 7 monster combat and start hacking. Learning to use the special abilities of your chosen class is the best reason to solo.

It's the only class that can detect and remove traps and pick locks, plus pickpocketing (stealing from shops) is very underrated. Once you learn to hide (cloak of non-detection + potions of invisibility) properly anything is possible.

You underestimate the sheer CHEESE power of Traps.

Question. How well do you know the game's spell system?

best soloing character in my opinion is Monk. U dont need to buy ANYTHING! your fists progress as magical weapons and u don't need armour. Also if u solo, u get +3 weapons (ie fists)before you can get them otherwise. Plus magic resistance and higher speed, immunity to poisons, Stunning Fist and Quivering Palm. Leaving you free to spend all of your money on shiny gems....and ale of course.

But they're just so damn effective. Especially the special ones from HLAs.

(edit - messed up quote)
