IWD2, better rules, less of a pain in the ass, at the start, the little dialogue deviations are cool.

IWD1- A good play, but you are weak as a kitten starting out. The starting town has a few quests, but MAYBE you'll be L2 by the time you leave. And goblins,,,,little bitty goblins...kick butt on your weak ass party.
IWD2- Also a good play, and the starting town has enough to do to be L3 by the time you are ready to leave. Character choices and skills are much more diversified. IWD1 has something that IWD2 doesn't though, 2 fine expansions..Heart of Winter, and Trials of the Luremaster. Both 1&2 are good games, play them both...and play them in order, because 2 refers to things that happen in 1. [ 12-23-2005, 06:54 PM: Message edited by: ElfBane ]

I preferred 2, due to the rules and action. Not to say that IWD1 was dull (I enjoyed it a lot), but it lacked certain moments that IWD2 had. Parts like Shaengarne bridge, Underdark, Malavon's citadel, and the seige of Targos to name a few, had a feeling of awesomeness that IWD1 didn't convey for me.

I think I really preferred one, with the expansions anyway. I played it a lot more times than I did 2, even though I was avidly watching for the release of 2, and wasn't all that disappointed.

IWD1 for the better story and the expansions. I particularly love TOTL. I just completed another run thru IWD1+HOW+TOTL, just so I could play TOTL again.
IWD2 for the ruleset and some of the great battles. There really weren't all that many great big battles in the IWD1 saga. While there's something to the flexibility of the IWD2 ruleset, I just played an elven fighter/mage in my IWD1 party and I seriously doubt that I'd have been able to play a similar character in IWD2. (I almost completely ignored her spellcasting in combat until after I was able to get Kaylessa's elven chain from the Severed Hand, so that she could cast a few spells without taking off her armor. Prior to that, it was plate armor for the F/M. BTW, she was my dedicated backup mage and archer, as well as 4th tank. A very flexible character, indeed.) |
