If you are leveling up everyone in the moment you get the level-up cross, then yes, this is the normal thing... I think.
If you dish-out some levels on some of your characters, and try, say, leveling up only one of them, the level of your party will keep very low and you will receive more XP. If you did that and all the sub-quests (which are not many), then at least one of your chars should be near 9 or 10. It's also a nice challenge trying to go through the game without leveling up. I still have to try lvl1 HOF, though...

On your wizzy, keep pumping knowledge arcana. Not having to ever learn the identify spell is niiiiiice
Alchemy skill is nice too, especially in certain areas

Cleave is nice (come on, it's a free attack people [img]tongue.gif[/img] ), Great Cleave is optional (only good for bulldozing through hordes of baddies you kill in one hit. Unless it happens to be a prerequisite for something, but I doubt that.)
