I don't get it. Doesn't protection from evil protect you from demons? When my mage wields the Staff of the Magi the pit fiends and demon dudes still attack her.

Protection from Evil protects you only from SUMMONED demons. Other demons will attack you no matter whether you have cast the spell or not. Examples:
1. You are about to summon a demon. You will cast Protection from Evil first so that the demon will not attack you.
2. You suspect a mage nearby that he can summon a demon. The spell is a good idea. If the mage really summons a demon then the demon will not attack you. It can attack your (unprotected) enemies instead.
Moreover, the spell itself gives you bonuses to saving throws and inflict penalties to those that attack you even if there are no demons around. I am not sure whether the penalties apply only on evil alinged enemies. Therefore, casting Protection from Evil is always a good idea.

In my experience it does. The person attacking you doesn't have to be evil to dislike you . Hence the "Protection from Good" spell for use with that type of overzealous persons.

Protection from evil is pretty powerful.

Since the person who started this post(Sorry, but I'm too lazy to click back and see who posted it) wasn't specific on weather or not s/he was being attacked by summoned demons or other demons, I'll put my two cents in anyway.
It is my experience that the Staff of the Magi doesn't protect you from demons in this manner. I guess it's a bug or something, but when anyone summons a demon and for some reason I don't have PFE 10' radius cast on my party I need to cast it; otherwise the demon heads right towards me.

Welcome to Ironworks, Illumina!

That is a known bug with the staff, and it can be fixed with the Baldurdash Fixpack patch. This thread has the links to the sites where you can download that:

Hope this helps!
