ok i run on win 98 and i just use its defrag. However i read an article a couple of months back about a guy who used windows defrag but said it didnt do that mch because when he ran it again straight afterwards it still took as long and he did this several times. My question is this.............
can anyone recommend any good defrag that are free to download? Or do u think that win 98 defrag is good enough? And lastly, how often should u defrag? I usually dont defrag often, once every couple of months or so. Is that often enough?

I haven't run my WIN's Disc Defragmanter for a looong time, but my computer still runs OK. I usually liked to run the program quite oftenly, but since I haven't seen any GREAT change, I never use it anymore. it seems that its purpose to make the computer runs more smoothly fails.

You will get a performance benefit if you run it on a very heavily fragmented machine. And if you run it weekly, you wont have to spend half of eternity defragging it when it does make a difference.

But its not much of a performance hit even in the worst cases, so if you dont run it at all it makes no odds.

Windows 2000's defrag is pretty good but then it's a rip off of Diskkeeper which is a pretty good one. You can get a 30 day trial on that one I believe (diskkeeper that is). Speed disk is also pretty good.
