OK, I would have posted this sooner but as you all know IW was unavailable for a while...

My PC was infected by a virus - a worm to be precise (W32.Klez.H@MM). It's a pretty nasty one as one of the things it does is that it attempts to disable on-access virus scanners and some previously distributed worms (such as W32.Nimda and CodeRed) by stopping any active processes. The worm removes the startup registry keys used by antivirus products and deletes checksum database files - which is why my antivrus couldn't work & couldn't reinstall as the registry was screwed.

But I'm happy to report that all is well now, as thankfully it's a quite easy to remove the infection.

Lessons learnt:

1. Always makesure your virus definitions are up to date.
2. Always update your resecue disks!!
