If you gotta turn off your computer at night to prevent overheating, there is definately an airflow problem. Do you dust the inside and fans of your computer from time to time? Dust is not a good friend of computer systems. Me personally, I had some strange noises from my computer awhile back, but dusting it fixed the problem. I don't think it would work as well for your problems, but hey, I've heard of people getting their PC's to work by kicking them, so anything could work I guess.

I suppose it couldn't hurt too much. Just keep the vacuum motor away from the computer (electromagnets run that sucker IIRC) and don't stick the hose inside your computer. Just your luck problem my be loose circuitry components and they end up sucked right into the vacuum . Oh yeah, how long since the last time you cleaned out the inside of your computer? I put my computer together about a year ago and when I cleaned it out there was hardly any dust except for on the fans. Then again I also have a nice Antec case with a dust filter in the front.

OK, shut down your computer for a few minutes. Use this time to find your motherboard manual. Find the section with the signal codes and turn on your computer. Find the combination you hear in the section of the manual and read up. Tell us what it says.

Stormy, did you have the computer custom built by a small company or one of the more mainstream (and more proprietary companies) like Dell or Gateway? As I recall they don't usually give you a motherboard manual cuz they want you to call them so you can pay them more money for repairs once your warranty is gone.

it was a walmart special, and I did not see a mother board manual, only a c drive, it seems to be working fine now, so I will probably just try the cleaning thing first, fyi it is a Hp Pavilion xt973 running windows xp

I can't for the life of me remember just how proprietary HP products are. If they are at all as bad as Compaq, then the new video card could conceivably be the issue. But I don't know.

better than a compaq, worse than a dell, all I can really tell you about it, do not know anything about the system, other than how to reboot it to factory settings, which is a last resort, but has been done numerous times
