Why couldn't this have happened a couple of years ago. It would have saved everyone a lot of bother and there would have been no need for a war.
SADDAM Hussein has suffered a minor stroke and could die before his trial, his defence lawyers claim. The multinational legal team is still awaiting permission to visit the deposed Iraqi ruler. A letter demanding their doctor be given access to the former dictator was yesterday sent by Jordanian lawyer Mohammed al-Rashdan to Salem Chalebi, the head of the Iraqi prosecuting authorities. Mr al-Rashdan said: "Our information is that he's in very poor health. We understand from the International Committee of the Red Cross that our client has had a brain scan to discover how badly he has been affected by the stroke. We believe he could die because of his health problems. "We also think an attempt may be made on his life. "We're very worried that we won't have a client to defend." He added: "Under the Geneva Convention we're entitled to have access to our client. But all our requests have been ignored." In a form letter delivered by the Red Cross in January to his wife Sajida, living in Qatar, Saddam put a cross in boxes for "good health" and "slightly wounded". "His finger appears to have been wounded, possibly by gunshot, when he was captured," said Mr Rashdan. "But we believe his health has deteriorated. "We believe any trial could be months, if not years away - I think Bush and Blair would be happier if he died from ill health." If Saddam had died a couple of years ago, his regime would have still thrived under the leadership of his sons.

Of course this *supposed* stroke has been caused by the Bush administration in an effort to keep Saddam quiet.

MSNBC is reporting that the Iraqi Ministry of Health(or whatever it's title is) has said today that Saddam has an acute infection of the prostate, but MSNBC made no mention of a stroke.
pritchke, do you have a link to the stroke story? It appears that Saddam's lawyers are making a claim based on the Red Cross, but I haven't heard anything about it.

Saddam has refused treatment for his prostate infection, the last I heard (a couple of days ago). Perhaps it's grown swollen, and he likes the new size.
If he dies, it could save us the trouble of one long drawn-out dog and pony show. OTH, it will make it more difficult for Iraqis to see all the years of evidence laid out before them. OTH (assuming you have a third hand), a stroke likely won't kill him, and may just (a) save his life by incapacitating him and/or (b) make him a really sympathetic defendant. Will any sacred cows be in the pony and dog show? As for him having a stroke...He shouldn't die so pleasantly...The bastard should be eaten from the inside by ravenous rats, or smaller mice. Or we could shove cockroaches up his ass until he starts to feel legs on the roof of his mouth, and then we could pump Velveeta (just cheese, no shells) down his throat, and see what happens. To paraphrase a very sadistic mercenary from Max Payne 2: It's not a scientific study of what happens when cockroaches eat lunch inside a man, it's entertainment.

As far as I know there is nothing pleasant about having a stroke.

Why ah? It seems that anyone who is in police custody/or in jail/or going to court/or in police lockup will develop have some kind of health related problem?
