what's this ball for??

Hi all!
Soo....I've been carting around this "shiny metal ball" for DAYS and I have no clue what to do with it! I haven't found any round-shaped holes other than the blue marble one at the Fourth Bough - spoilers welcome!
Also, it's kind of OT but I've been having another problem with gameplay in general. The game seems to crash back to the desktop when I try to do certaion things (big one so far is entering Umpani Base Camp.) I've tried this with and without Myles in the party but it still keeps crashing. I have other little weird details also - things like in the character screen when I highlight the "uase" button it says "Uncurse All Items" and the flamethrower is labeled "Female Only." I've emailed sir-tech and they just said to reinstall, recopy the levels.slf file, and manual install, all of which I've done except for manual install. I'm going to try that next but I just wondered if anyone else has had this problem. It seems weird just because most of the game plays fine but in certain areas it doesn't work right. Oh, one more thing: merging two light crossbows has no effect - they just stay separate and I don't get the "Can't merge" or "Cannot be merged" messages. Thanks for input - sorry this is so long!

Are you playing the game with the latest Wiz8 patch from Sir-Tech installed? If you have done so and still experiencing the same problems, I think you may have to reinstall the game or to send your savegame to Sir-Tech.

There's some discrepancy in whether the game accurately tells you something can't be merged, can't be merged by that character, or says nothing. That's what's causing this problem. You will need a 35 in Engineering for your Gadgeteer to be able to merge the crossbows and a 70 to merge the double-shot with another lt. x-bow to create the triple-shot.

You use the ball back in Arnika at the spaceport. Remember the note you found at the one ransacked console?
