Thanks Moni... I was going to add my 2 cents but you said what I thought purty durn well...

I was in therapy for the last few years with some stress related injuries... and now think of chiropractors and massage therapists as my best friends. Whatever you do, take care of your body first, as my Dad always says, because it is the only one you got.

Let us know how you do!

You are kidding right? NOTHING is more important than your personal health, physically or emotionally, except for the health of a loved one. At the end of the day, play or not, win or lost it is still JUST a game, and in know way is worth risking yourself for it.

Sounds like good advice all the way around, except for one thing.

If at all possible, put some heat on it to help relax the muscles. You may be having muscle spasms that are causing the pain, and using a heating pad, etc. will help to get them to relax.

Zeeke75,
So True!
Ice for new injuries and heat for healing ones!

On an added note Aceteminophine and ibuprofin have been scientifically linked to kidney damage after prolonged use.

I recommend coated aspirin with a large glass of water to insure that the aspirin cannot affect your stomach in any harmful way as so many people believe.

Suffering from an ulcer and kidney damage, I can tell you first hand that when you take enough water with your aspirin, there is no danger of harm...not so with aspirin substitutes.

I get usually one headache a year that I'll take something for and I use extra strength coated Bufferin caplets. Grandpa takes an Ecotrin every morning and so does Rex...aspirin thins the blood and reduces the chances of a heart attack. They are both overweight and have high cholesterol levels, which makes them prime candidates.

Moni

Yeah, I usually find that combining the two works really well. Ice it down to reduce the swelling, then use heat to get things to loosen up and relax. When I'm really in pain, I try to use 20 minutes of ice, then 20 minutes of heat, and alternate back and forth a few times. Depending on the severity of the pain, it usually takes most of it away.

I damaged a ligament in my back once, by sliding a PC across a desk badly.
I am allergic to all non-steroid anti-inflammatories (can cause stomach haemorrage), and was on strong drugs that left me in a dazed stupor for weeks. This was more than 5 years ago and I still have problems occasionally with muscle spasms in my lower back.

Although many practitioners used to advise lying down, this is now often frowned upon, as your muscles become stiff and recovery will take longer. So hobbling around and doing gentle activity is fine if you can manage it, but don't do anything that involves stretching at an angle (although you should do stretching exercises if advised by your doctor). A heat pad on the affected area also helps by stimulating the bloodflow, as will some sort of menthol or camphor rub.

So playing any sort of sport is out for the moment I'm afraid. Believe me, you do NOT want to make it worse. And if it isn't feeling better in a couple of days you should seek medical advice. This may seem alarmist, but any damage to your back can affect the rest of your life.
