I have successfully completed Shurugeon Castle, but I have been going through the wilderness trying to avoid the salads. I have no spells or potions to destroy them with, and I am sure I can't carry on avoiding them before they kill me. What's the first spell avaliable that can actually hurt them?

Flamedrop has always been one of my favorites...

You can also find flamestrike scrolls which are helpful, as are any *storm scrolls.

It's best to attack them from a distance. You can take one of them on in hand-to-hand combat, but if there are two, you're dead. With one, you can attack often enough that it can't attack you. With two, you can't attack both of them fast enough. With three or more... *plays taps*

Personally, I like attacking them from the walls of Shurugeon Castle. They can't get too close to you then...

BTW, vine spells just don't work against them AFAIK... so all those poison bombs are pretty much useless.

In the wood near the Shuru Castle is a point, where the trees leave a tiny hole between them - just large enough to see the plants and attack them out of safe distance...use ALL MANA and offensive spells, recharge, and do it again...few minutes later they are all toast.

Hmmm, I wonder if the mantraps can drown, if one creates a portal in the lake and teleports them there. [img]graemlins/1ponder.gif[/img] This calls for an experiment.

Create Portal / Teleport and Vanish work on other creatures as well as on oneself. Experiment...

Yes, To add to what Bungleau said. If it's alone. You can take the chance to out manuever it's breath attack and go melee with it. When melee it won't use it's breath attack ( IIRC ). However don't go melee if there are 2 or more. This is because they'll start to use breath attack against you even in melee.

They can, even in the melee combat. If you want to fight salads successfuly then you must be highly resistant to poison and have Merlin Shield.

Therefore, buy some Merlin Shield scrolls in the Mages Guild (you can buy any number of them there) if you cannot cast the spell yourself and do not haste with getting rid of poison protecting items (Algamesh Amulet and, if you have already played the game, then "inherit" to the new game run such items like Ward of Poison or Bracelet Pro Poison).
The salads seem to be almost helpless against the Merlin Shield spell and the resistance to poison. Well, they can hit you with their physical attack but their most devastating attack - the poisonous cloud - is rather harmless now.
Note that resistance to poison itself does not suffice. Even with 100% for poison, you will run into serious problems without Merlin Shield.
