watch the double posts man. You should really delete one. anyways, one thing you should do is use dispel magic and breach.

yet again, please delete one of these posts.

a) what level is your party and b) how experience are you at BG2 styled games, becuas if you say less then 10 and none i wouldn't be suprised. same thing happened to me.....

just do a few thing adn we can help give more party details, delete the double post, and don't ask us to Pm you with the tips, the idea is its a message board, so you can talk on this....

also i would welcome you to ironworks, and probably others will, but i'm against it as nobody ever welcomed me......

You might also consider adding some SPOILER tags to the question. (Or eliminate the details of the red dragon's identity ... hate to see the surprise ruined for anybody.)

Thanks and welcome.

EDIT: now that the original message has been edited, mine had become a spoiler ... so I've revised it.

As I don't know your party levels and classes many of these tips may not work for you, but anyway.
  • try a tag-team attack: Buff up one of your tanks to the max (don't forget fire resistance) and get the rest of the party out of sight. Beat up the Big Red as much as possible. When your tanks health goes down, buff up a second tank and send him in retreating the first one
  • use the spell "Lower Resistance" to get his Magic Resistance down. Then hit him with - preferably instakill - spells
  • get your party out of sight again and attack with a ranged weapon from a character with maximum fire resistance
  • Use your most effective tanks on the frontline and keep healing them with your clerics. Use the mages for summons or other annoying spells to distract him. When up against a hard enemy summons come in particularly handy because they distract the damage from the party.

"Best" party setup:
  • 3 or 4 Warriors (Fighters, Barbarians, Paladins, Rangers, Monks)
  • 1 or 2 Priests (Clerics, Druids)
  • 1 Thief
  • 2 Wizards (Mages, Sorcerers)
You'll notice that, if you follow those rules, your party has 7-9 people in it. That means that some party members are going to have to fill more than one role: Jan, for example, is a great Thief, and works quite well as a backup Wizard. Anomen is a fine Cleric, and also makes a passable Fighter.

Dragon-Slaying tips:
  • Know thy enemy: Learn the different colors of Dragons, and the breath weapons that they use. Before fighting the Dragon, try to attain immunity to that element (if you have the time), and don't try to use that element against the Dragon.
  • Attack from as many directions as possible: If you all charge in from one side, a single Wing Buffet could knock your entire party Unconscious at once.
  • Tanks are useful in keeping the Dragon distracted, while your ranged people are firing off arrows or spells. Summons can make good (read: expendable) Tanks.
  • Dragons are scary! Try to have a Remove Fear or Resist Fear handy.
  • Love your Healing Potions--Dragons can dish out a lot of damage, so get used to the idea of sending a party member in to do battle, then pulling him back when he gets Badly Injured, then shoving some Potions down his throat and sending him back in.

The best advice is to listen to Six of Spades!

Welcome to IW you'll like it here, some of these people know this game better than the people who made it. Check out the search feature but watch out for spoilers, if its your first time through it can really spoil some great surprises.

By the way to answer your question... To me the key is to lower his magick resistance (hope you have that spell). Then with breach and pierce spells then send in decoys (summoned) to suck up the killer spells and attacks. Try to hit him with as many missiles as possible while he's occupied. Youll need some body who can step in deal out some real damage, and take some.

Have fun!
