3rd edition is a lot better than 2nd. Your character development is so much more fun now.

And this is comming from a guy who owns almost every thing published for 2nd ed. - which now is almost unusable

As to NWN using 3rd. - I LIKE IT even though they should have included the prestige classes. They implemented it a lot better than Pool of radiance 2.

Comment on Blade's post : BG2 does NOT use any 3rd ed rules. If you are referring to the subclasses they have existed in 2nd ed. very long.

I dont like how everyone can take 'every class' one of the charms of being human was u could chose any class. doesnt make a diff to me since I always chose elf. but it *does* take away some of my foundations for hating paladins. *sighs*

Elves were able to multiclass, they just couldn't dual class, meaning they couldn't stop being one class and learn another set of skills, but they could adventure as multiple calsses simultaneously

the you obviously haven't looked at the rules for any of the games, 1st edition is very similar to 2nd, second added proficiencies (now called skills), as well as alot of content and many game worlds, one of the changes it made however was to remove alot of demonic references, demons/devils/daemons became baatezu/tannar'ri/yugoloths in the name of political correctness, to get cristian groups off of their(TSR's) backs. It also removed the assassin and monk as player classes, and the 1/2orc as a playable race.

third edition then came along and ruined the whole thing, they completely screwed up alot of things that us longtime 1st and 2nd editioners held as sacred, the Armor Class system for instance, as well as messing up Thac0, it destroyed the bard as an enjoyable, playable character. everything done in 3rd edition was tried at one point or another with a different sourcebook in second edition, the skill system was added in the skills & powers book, many of the combat options were added in combat and tactics, or the fighters handbook. the vast majority of changes I like, have been house rules for a long time, ie fighters have to be level 3 to specialize, as how can a person fresh out of joe's fighter school learn a weapon that well, not to mention level drain, I had used it as a temporary reduction as the normal costs of level drain were way too high, the restoration spell only gave you enough exp to be at the level you originially had, screwing you over if you were close to leveling.

As a long suffering dm I much prefer the 3rd ed rules. Easier to dm and teach to new players. I like the new flexibility in creating characters. Monsters can be made a lot more challenging just by adding a few character levels. The characters in the novels could pick up all different classes for decades. I'm just glad we can do it now too. The second ed dual and multi class rules were just completely illogical.

I actually like the change that a positive AC is better. Makes much more sense, it was done that way in Wizardry 8, and once I figured out what was going on I liked it much more than negative being better.

I also like the point buy system for abilities. I like that your character is kind of weak to start with but gets stronger with experience. Makes sense. It also stops me from making characters with 18 in every important stat and like 6 in ones I don't care about lol . Also I like that you have to have 9 intelligence to speak properly. Is much more realistic than some of the intelligence 3 characters I had running around in BG saving the world completely lucidly
