I read the manual and it said that the bastard sword is a two handed weapon...but it's not!
Are the bastard swords good and do they do more damage if they are wielded by themselves, without a shield?

You are correct, that the bastard sword is a one-handed weapon,,,but let me tell you what little esle I know...which is not much.
A bastard sword (as it has been explained to me...) was the idea that someone wanted a one-handed sword with more strength behind it. I do not remember the reason that the name was given, but basically, you can swing it with one hand, but has a longer hilt to be able to grab it with both hands and use it as a two-handed sword. It is hevier, but not as much as a two handed weapon. It is a long-sword and a half. So, tedhnically, you can use a shield with it, but you will be slower in movement rate than if you were using a regular long-sword. I do not know your stats, but you may determine that the effort to wield a bastard sword and hold a shield may be too much for your character. My favored playing style is fast and furious. I fight "Fire" style, so I use lighter-weight weapons, sometimes in pairs, and do fast damage,, before the attacker can respond. Therefore, I do not work much with bastards.

I admit to being new to third edition rules...but from what I understand...weight of items plays a more important part to the concept than before. I gotta get somebody else to really answer your question right. I am still novice.

hrm, no idea what importance weight has if any; where did you get the idea that it has an effect at all? looks like i need to do some reading somewhere.
As for the bastard sword...im not sure what the difference between it and a katana is, i can use either of them the same ways. my best guess is a roleplay factor since the katana is sort of eastern and the bastard sword is sorta western. |

Well, the Bastard sword is a one or a twohanded weapon. IN NWN they have clearly made it much simplified then in the P&P rules.
The Bastardsword is a twohanded weapon unless you take a feat two be able to choose how to swing it around.. In NWN this does not really make much different, but the difference in P&P can be alot. The sword does D10 as basic damage, and the only problem I have is that the game doesn´t let you choose to wield it with two hands or not.. Same with bucklers, when to use it or not could be simpler, now it is just another small shield.. Weight do make a big difference. The different encumbrance states determines your max speed and movement as your Max dex and skill penalty. Not sure how much they have added into NWN. For example, a rouge with heavy armour looses many powers, for example the evasion feat, and has a max dex of +3 or something.. Not sure and too tired to go and check the accurate numbers for ya *yawn*
