And VulcanRider, since my answer wasn't expected by the author of the book, would you mind cluing me in to the "correct" solution?
Sure. Tancred posted this earlier:

Ok. Let's assume Freda's birthday is the 31st December. Today is the 1st of January, 2003; the day before yesterday was the 30th December, 2002. Next year would be 2004.

30th December 02 - she's 17.
31st December 02 - she's 18.
1st January 03 - she's 18.

30th December 03 - she's 18.
31st December 03 - she's 19.
1st January 04 - she's 19.

So, when the 31st December 04 rolls around, she becomes 20.

LoL, sorry .. its the translation that made it overly difficult.
Your first answer was correct,.. its my crappy translation that's incorrect

Newayz,.. that was the answer that I was looking for
I was going to ask for another method too .. but you answered that one in your edit
Need to find original riddles

Thanks, VulcanRider. I didn't realize that was the correct solution. Guess I ought to open my eyes more often

We wouldnŽt want this to fall off the page would we now? OK to make this post anything more than a blatant bump IŽll post a riddle. IŽll start off with an easy one.

12 men are carrying 12 sacks of flour from the mill to the baker. The work takes one hour and every man can only carry 1 sack of flour. How long would it take 6 men to do the same work?

Incalculable, but if you make the assumpution that foot speed dosent vary regardless of how much weight the person is carrying - three hours.

Bah what do you mean "foot speed"? They were men! That says it all. LOLOL!OK that one was easy, IŽll try another one:

Two cyclists are training on a circular track. X needs 1 minute more to complete a circuit than Y does. X has cycled a certain stretch of the track when Y begins, When Y catches up to X, he (Y that is) has completed 4 circuits plus a stretch that is equal to XŽs head start. At this moment X has been cycling for 56 minutes and 20 seconds. How fast was Y going if the track is 8km?

Hint: This is an old mathematical problem from my high school days.
