A subject somewhat close to my heart and when in the USA I noted that the English flag is possibly not recognised. The Union flag is. This quote got me wondering how many people would actually recognise the English flag abroad.
Hope you don't mind my using this here /)eathKiller. Quote:
Err, I'm not asking the above nations btw.

I think people would recognise the English flag if they watch internation football alot. I know my cousin in Hungary knows the English flag from the United Kingdom one. I live in England and I know what the stand-alone Scottish one looks like and have a vague picture of a flag with a dragon for the Welsh flag. Of course I know the English one and Republich of Ireland of course, but I don't know does Northern Ireland have its own flag?

You make a good point! The Union Jack is the one I'm familiar with. Is that the right name for it?

Well I'll tell you, Charlie, I sure learned something from your post. Like Ronn-Bman, I though the Union Jack was the flag of England. Yes, I am an American BUT I truly do watch a lot of educational channels that deal with the history of the the world. Still, I never knew about the stand alone flag of England. Please enlighten further what the colors mean and how long this flag has represented your country.

Well I knew the white background-red cross was the English flag, like Vaskez, from sport. You don't really see flags very much except in sporting contexts. And you Brits (or Britts, of course ) have to be difficult! England, Wales, Scotland and all that separately for some, Great Britain for others. Apparently the ECB is actually the England and Wales Cricket Board - what flag does (should?) the English team use then? Is there a difference between the United Kingdom and Great Britain btw? Isn't the Scottish blue with a diagonal white cross in it? I could of course be mistaken.. we used to own the Playmobil Pirate Ship, and there were a bunch of flags with that as well..
I knew about the English one, and the Irish as well.. Can't forget the last one, cos the Irish stopped us from going to the WC Soccer in South Korea/ Japan! Ah well.. it's something we did to ourselves, I guess.. EDIT: I looked it up, and I was right!! Woohoo! Yay for the Playmobil memories! [ 02-16-2003, 03:29 AM: Message edited by: Link ]
