Can anyone recommend a good book that collects all the stories on Greek mythology? The number of books out there is overwhelming so I need a little help.I don't really want a history style book, but rather a collection of tales about the gods, monsters and heroes-something like Homers Odyssey.

Um. Can I make what may seem like a silly suggestion? Try the Childrens' department of your local library or bookshops. There are some great collections of stories from various mythologies to be had (well, there are in England, anyway): anything from heavily illustrated slim volumes for the younger child, to great fat volumes with slightly less pictures for the older child. They are much better than adult collections if you just want the stories...

I'd recommend Mythology by Edith Hamilton. It is commonly used as a text book and is pretty thorough. I think it touches on Norse Mythology too.

Try Robert Graves. He was a translator/author who wrote I Claudius, but also compiled anthologies of Greek Myths.
His "Greek Myths" volumes 1 and 2 are published by Penguin and should be easily available - if not in a local bookstore then Amazon.com should be able to supply them. ------------------ Time is an illusion. The true classic is "Galley's Mythology".. which actually lists all kinds of mythology, not just greek.
The other one we can think of is "Gods & Warriors"... am not sure of the author.. perhaps Prouse? ------------------ Sometimes I think I understand everything, then I regain consciousness. Happy Member of Fast Fourward. |

The young adult fictions section in the library is the best for mythology. Those damn huge ass tomes in the adult section have little tiny writing to make them have thousands of pages and they devote a good portion of it to gods castrating their fathers and removing them from power. Im not kidding they are obsessed with castration.
