I have all four in my party but if I had to choose I'd coose Minsc cause of his interactions and more hit points and Imoen cause she's your sister but Jan is a better theif.

Minsc if u want the game to have some type of comic relief.
The dude is funny. But if you want the game to be as dull as grass growing... pick Valygar. The guy does not say any damn thing.

Imoen diffenetely. Smarter (get more spells) and a far better thief.

That's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

I would choose Valigar and Imoen.
Valigar - because of interesting side-quest and pleasant personality (yes, he says almost nothing but I still like him ). But Minsc is far better fighter.
Jan - as for me - talks too much. It was funny at first but sometimes - just annoying.

I say pick Minsc and Imoen:
Minsc - psychotic ranger with a hamster, one of the top tanks in the game whether it is 2-hand sword or dual wield
Imoen - decent thief, and a VERY good mage, a bit weak in the STR but has the hitpoints and DEX

Imoen! She's a great mage and if you are'nt using the exp cap remover, she'll reach higher mage levels than Jan. I've never really played with Jan. Not a big fan of the 'wee folk.

Why?

Definitely Minsc and Imoen. I usually dislike rangers, but Minsc is just a great and well-thought-out character. I like Imoen, she is developed more, and seems more mature in BG2.

Oh and Minsc has some great lines while Valygar's a bore. And Imoen is crucial to the plot.
