I just made a very cool discovery in multiplayer.
My character is an Elf, and when I type something that starts with an [ , the game translates anything I say to Elvish.
Sweet!

*shrugs* It works on various servers, so I suppose its a part of the game engine.

It isn't part of the engine. It's a script the DM incorporates into the server (I have it in mine). You can speak any language from elven to giant-kin putting that prefix before it or using the language widget item.

The thing is the languages seem to be (somewhat) randomly generated and do not make sense as a whole. It's more of a decorative script, no-one has the time to create a language and then script it in full. If you want to test this then make up a word and it will make one up too.

The use is that two gnomes, for example, could speak in their weird language without the nearby dwarf overhearing what they say. Naturally, that human who studies their tongue is able to eavesdrop on them, but no need to give that away...

Without the script it's usually represented by adding an abbreviation to the line (For example, a druid speaking to an animal might type "EA So what's new in the forest?", implying he uses his animal empathy to speak, or elves might type "E That's a fine bow brother..."). If a nearby character also knows this language he can overhear, if not the player simply ignores it or makes comments about the funny language in use.
The other "don't trust the other players"-kind of way is to emote " *Speaks in Drow (to ...)* ". Then you basically 'tell' the other player what you said. Anyone else interested who thinks they know the language also sends a tell to the speaking player requesting to know what was said.
Finally there are those who simply use a dictionary or translator to simpy speak the language directly... Not too user-friendly but fun all the same.

SpiritWarrior,

Is the script you are using a custom content script that is downloadable from the vault? Would love to be able to access it.

BTW, I wish that the base NWN / SOU game had this script automatically activated and an option language skill usage as well. It would add tremendous flavor to the game.

It is currently now intergrated into the DMFI, a horde of tools for DM's. You can get it on the vault and a few of It's variants too.
