The USA isn't that bad at football (soccer). Their FIFA rank is 13. We'll just have to see just how good the USA is by watching the world cup .
BTW..Cameroon drew with Ireland 1-1 |

What a moronic statement, whoever made it (although I think he was being deliberately provocative).
I think Donut hit the nail on the head - I would suspect that the reason that he (not Americans in general) don't care about the World Cup is because the US is not a world power in soccer, the way they are in basketball, hockey, American football (seeing as Americans are really the only one that play this) and baseball (ditto). I'm surprised he was allowed to say this in public - ESPN are supposed to be an international network, and they have devoted a lot of time and space to the World Cup on espn.com. This shows an appalling lack of consideration for international viewers - as Saz says it's the stereotypical "self-centred American" that many Americans are unfairly portrayed as overseas by a moronic minority such as that moron. I would have said whoever said that was on drugs, except that I don't think he was. Two reasons: ONE - he doesn't need drugs to be this stupid; and TWO - he must be so moronic that he wouldn't be able to open the package and get them out. |

1. In American football you can get hit from anywhere, when you least expect it, and there are no restrictions on types of tackles. You can get hit even when you don't have the ball, when blockers hit you. If you don't have time to brace for the impact of a tackle because it's coming from out of nowhere, I guarantee that your propensity to get injured will be FAR higher than if you ended up on the bottom of a ruck in rugby and get treated as part of the ground by the opposing team. 2. The helmets, pads, etc which protect players from serious injury sustained in reason 1 above can actually CONTRIBUTE to serious injuries in themselves. Imagine making a break down the sideline and getting tackled full tilt around the thighs by someone wearing a helmet which smashes into your patella (kneecap). It ain't pleasant. |

Trivia factoid of the day:
There are more soccer fans and players in the US than in Britain.
