I want to download a Morrowind mod but it's 74mb ! I uses 56k modem ( dial up connection ). so it will take me hours to finish downloading it. Does download accelerator helps in making the download faster? if yes then which kind of download accelerator would you recommend?

thanks.

Personally I use FlashGet (available from www.amazesoft.com )and it works fine by me. Just be aware that afaik, all the free download accelerator utilities come bundled with some form of spyware.

Why? I always thought those were a scam???

with 56k might be a different story.. but best download accelerator you can get is a cable or like connection

Your computer (connection tot he internet) can already download things.. getting an extra program to download things makes your computer start a program and then download when you click on that link instead of just downloading when you click on it..

imo download speed is directly related to your connection and not a program on your computer.

only reason to use one is for the resume features they come with.... they usually make no difference to download speeds...

I don't since I usually don't download files much above 10 megabytes.

Just a reason more to be into Doom.

Download acclerators are a waste of time, they just open up more connections to the server - and when your bandwidth is already maxed out this will have no effect on the total time spent downloading.

Using accelerators can also get your IP banned from some sites, like www.the-underdogs.org. As someone else said, they often also contain spyware which is sometimes gives you a terrible time to remove.

Download accelerators can make a small difference if the download server is throttling connections till they're slower than what you can handle. So if the server is serving 1000 downloads you can only get 1/1000 of the total bandwidth. If thats slower than your connection, then a download accelerator can open a second connection and you get 2/1001 of the total bandwidth. In theory at least, in practice servers shouldn't accept connections when their overloaded to that degree.

What *is* worth getting is a download manager like getright. It supports swarm downloading like above, but more importantly it supports download resuming. if the serrver supports it, you can get cut off at 5Kb short of a 100Mb download and not have to hurt whoever picked up the phone. Definately worth using, especialy on dialup.

Question Mark

I use Internet Download Manager which I've found really speeds up my downloads (I've got an ADSL connection). Why?

1. I'm getting up to 80kbps per download which is more than double I was getting before;
2. I can download multiple files (up to 8 and still have speeds of around 15-20kbps per file; and
3. I can resume downloads that have been broken for whatever reason.

I started off with a 30-day trial and loved it so much that I've paid my $20 and registered it.

In my place, we only have dial up connection only, we have no luxury like cable or ADSL or ISDN or whatever that is.

so the real advantage of accelerators is the resume download function. Since I got frequent disconnection it might be a good idea. but what I want is a faster download time.

well, I'll be trying some of the programs that you guys/gals? mention. thanks.
