I cannot raise my characters. They're human, yet when i read the resurection or raise dead scroll nothing happens, i just loose the scroll. Help!

Are the character portraits still shown on the right side of the screen? If not they've been permanently killed and cannot be raised. This happens when the killing blow is too strong (they will explode into bits, you've probably seen it on your enemies.) Reload a previous save game.
