Playing Old Games

Hello

I have acquired two old pc games, (elvira and elvira 2) and wish to play them, now the problem is that these games were designed for Windows 95/98 and I have Windows XP
Anyone have any suggestion how I can get my Pc to run these games??

Try Dosbox

Although I think it only supports Dosgames... and you need a engineerdegree to get it to work.

I remember playing Elvira 1 on my Atari STe, great game.

Compatibility mode is also a good thing... you can check the W&W board's Tech Tips sticky thread for some other ideas.

Also, right click on the main executable file and click on properties. Click on the memory tab. There are usually two type of memory that are defaulted to '0', while all of the rest are 'auto' or some value. Change those two that are '0' to 'auto'. I have found that most dos games that I have are playable on Windows XP by changing the compatability and the memory settings.

if you r-click the programme icon there is a box that says run in windows 95 compatibility mode, this sounds like it might help.

As a last resort you could format some old computer with 95 and play perfectly [img]smile.gif[/img]

I've been trying to play a couple of old games actually and getting the soundcard to work has been hell. I gave up after many unsecuessfull attempts, i'll take a look at dosbox.

If you struggle to come to terms with Dosbox, why not just purchase and build a new machine made out up out of cheap old parts - that's what I did!

I have a DX4-100 with Win95 and QEMM97, a potent little hard-working retro gaming machine which works perfectly. Its been running everything I've asked of it like a dream so far. Going to play the speech version of the first Gabriel Knight on it next.

But dosbox shouldn't be really that hard to use, surely!

Umm yes, if you notice you play older computer games quite a lot. You might want to consider having a older computer.

I have an old brand Acer computer. Serve it purpose of playing older games.

No it doesn't add anything. Yes it makes the whole process easier. Here I'll even find it for you

Enjoy. I used this to run XCOM 2 last week. Particularly, pay attention to the "Cycles", as this is how fast the game will run. A 'recent' old game like XCOM 2 might need 19,000, while a dosbox game might just need the 2,000 or whatever it starts on.
