defragging with my 40GB harddrive never took longer then 2 hrs. You can easily just start it before you go to sleep and wake up to check the results

The only bad thing about defragging alot is the extra use of the hard disk read/write heads and arm-moving motors. It'll probably decrease the life of your hard-disk. Most things in life are done best by following the golden middle route. I.e. defrag regularly but not that often. This is why it is a good idea to have seperate partitions: try and put data that changes alot on a seperate partition so that you can defrag only that partition.

I think it's time to defrag, or maybe you have to many files on your computer and you need to do a bit of a clean up.

Scan disk should be done about once a month, defragmenting for people without partitions should be done about once every two months...

Defragging never took more than four hours for me...but scandisk...yuck! I only ever did a "thorough" scan once, and it took three days...

My suggestion is to defrag as often as you like/want, like LennonCook said. The more often you defrag, the less time it will take.
8 hours for 37 gigs? You're kidding right? My 40Gb takes approxiamtely 1 hour to complete. A "little" longer for my 120Gb... There are a few defrag programs that are way better to use than Windows on. I believe oodefrag has a free version you could try out.
well, my 40 gig takes 15 minutes to complete and it is around 83% full. I think it depends on amount of ram, processor speed, etc. on how much time it takes to complete
