Why can't I play this Game?!?!?!, Its getting to the point now where I believe fate is conspiring against me so that I will never play it.

Back when Bg2 was released I got my first glimpse of NWN with the video that comes with it, and knew straight away that I wanted it. going back to the start of the year before the release date kept being put back I decided to put some of my birthday money to one side so that I could afford the game upon release(I was a student at the time, we students are very poor ) a few months later the CD drive in my computer exploaded (literally) and i was forced to spend my NWN money on a new one. Finally just after I finished college the game was released and I still had no cash and because of all the school and college leavers around the country getting work was quite hard, so i decided to sign up for some job seekers allowance. About three weeks after NWN was released my first payment was due (finally NWN would be in my grasp), but fate wasn't so kind to be because of a mistake by the job centre my job seekers allowance claim had been terminated and I would have to claim again. I did, and got a letter saying everything was alright and I would get my payment at the start of this week. On monday I went to my bank eager to draw out the cash to buy NWN, but guess what! I had no money in, my dad said give it a couple of days as it might take a while to go in and offered to lend me the money until i got mine. I eagerly accepted then I set off for my local electonics boutique (Finally I thought to my self as i stepped through the door) But once again fate had denied me, after frantically searching the stores shelves to no avail I asked one of the store assistants only to be told that they had just sold the last copy and wasn't expecting another shipment for a few days. Depressed but not defeated I set off to the the next shop likely to sell it Dixons (can you guess what? thats right they didnt have it either, actually they didn't have any PC game left at all, the whole PC section was bare?!?!? I didn't ask why I wasn't in the mood). Next stop was WH Smiths sat at the very top of the shelf sat a lone copy of NWN in all its glory, I reached up and took it down, a sigh of relief passed my lips as I held it at last between my hands, fate had finally smiled upon me. I went straight to the counter and handed it over to the woman, because it was only a display box she had to go into the back of the shop and fetch an actual copy of the game. Now usually they go fetch the game and come back, but oh no not with me. She went in and then disappeared after about 10 minutes I was getting pretty worried, I hadn't had the most luck when it came to this game. Finally she appeared with a copy of the game, she appologiesed for the delay and I payed for the game. At last I owned NWN . I managed to get home in record time that day, and was straight up the stairs. Only to find my mum in my room. We had planned for me and my sister to swap rooms in september, but due to a day off work she thought she would get it done that day (and guess what, my PC had to be packed away). This was the last straw I couldn't wait any longer instead of packing it up I lugged it all down stairs and set it up in the living room. The game installed like a dream, I then watched a very nice opening scene of some dude fighting a minotaur, I cant express the feeling I had, finally NWN installed on my computer. After the opening sequence disaster struck. A blank screen appeared, the game curser was there and there was music playing, but no picture. I assume i was on some sort of menu screen. As soon as this happened I went straight to the NWN site in there support section I discovered and I quote:

3DFX is no longer in business; although some Voodoo 5 cards may work occasionally they are no longer supported by 3DFX and available drivers do not generally include complete OpenGL support required for Neverwinter Nights. Hence, 3DFX graphics cards are not supported by NWN.

There was my problem I have a 3DFX card and cannot play the game . Down hearted I thought to my self well at least things cant get any worse
I was wrong. Whilst I was in town getting the game, a letter had arrived for me from the job centre, it said that due to another mistake I would have to make yet another claim. I now owed my dad £35 that I didn't have. Needless to say I promtly returned the game to the store.

So a summary: I really dont have much luck

I am currently thinking about whether I should fork out for a new graphics card when I get a job and then getting the game, but knowing my luck the NWN curse will start over again and there will be another reason I cant play it.

Man, sorry to hear that you were having so much trouble. You could maybe consider renting a computer to at least try out the game. That could tell you if you want to buy it again or not. If you have a friend that could let you "borrow" his copy, then you wouldn't have to buy the game again. Well, at least til you are ready to get your own copy. It's a pretty cool game, but depending on what you expect will determine whether it will be good or not. Since you have had to wait so long, your expectations may have gotten pretty high. I like multi-play with it (you will need the CD key to do this feature so will need to get your own copy). If you mainly do single play though, It will be just your character and a henchman (if you pay him) to traverse the game. Pretty fun, but much different than BG or BG2.
