As some of you may know, I am in my last year of high school, and will be going to post-secondary education next year. My short list of institutions is:
 • Dalhousie (Halifax)
 • Queen's (Kingston, Ont)
 • McGill (Montreal)
 • Boston College
 • Florida State University
 • University of Southern California
 • UC Berkeley

I was wondering what everyone thinks of those places. My preferred 3 would probably be Dalhousie, USC and Boston College, as I have heard good things about all of them. I am maintaining an 87% average, so academics shouldn't be too much of a problem. I will be pursuing a Bachelor of Arts (ie a little bit of everything ). So whaddya think?

I thought you were going into the army.

Either way try to get into all the ones that you want and then make the choice when you know which ones will take you.

For BAs berkeley is great - and the weather there is just awesome.

If you were going for engineering or lawyering, I'd say McGill.

I would agree with this approach. I can't comment on the actual universities and which ones would be best, but narrow down your options based on the reputation and opportunities of departments and schools within each university rather than the university as a whole. If say you wanted to major in history, and one university had a great reputation because of its business and law schools but its history department is sub-par, that's not going to help you much. Check out the academics in the areas you want to study, what sort of research they're doing, what sort of courses they offer, and how reputable that department is in industries that employ people with that degree.

If you're hitching onto college for a BA, think about what you want to do after college. I'm majoring in liberal arts (will that be for here or to go? hehe) and planning to be an author. So I chose a writing school. I think the main question is, are you trying to pursue something artistic (art, theater, dance, writing, etc.) or using your BA as a springboard into something else (communications, journalism, social sciences, etc.)?

If you're thinking US as a place to study, you might want to expand your search. Smaller colleges (such as Mary Washington College in my hometown) often bend over backwards for out-of-country students, and even offer a few extra scholarships.
