Well ok the first part of the game...i CHEATED and got the ankheg armor AND the Ring of Wizardry and a few items to sell for good money and it STILL took me forever to get through the mines. Not only do the kobolds come nonstop but you have only like a 40% chance of sleeping without getting attacked!!!

After the mines...I just rack up on snow wolf fights and pelts and that's all I really need heh....

Is anyone else here just terrible at using their brain when it comes to rpg's?

Ok, you got the ring of wizardry and the ankheg armour - its not cheating unless you use CLUA by the way - and then you *sold* them?

Nashkel mines took me 35 minutes. Most of that was spent reloading a section of level 3 where the kobolds happened to have a large tactical advantage. No biggy. The reason for this is I never sell anything valuable. Ring of Wizardry firmly on finger, ankheg plate - dosent exist because DSotSC replaces it with a cloak. Various rings of prot+1, every tank has a large shield and splint mail at a minimum.

Gold is useless in combat. Never sell something you can use to good effect.

OH, and tell me you searched mulaheys corpse. Until recently ive always forgotten to do it, what with that cutscene. But I remembered this time, and what a haul. Viconia is *lethal* now

I don't think you suck at RPGs n00body, you just need to think about things differently. Make sure you adventure thoroughly and systematically. As dull as it is, going through all the maps and killing off enemies will give you a lot of experience and some great items and gold. This way you won't need to worry about getting killed easily (because you'll be stronger through experience) and you can get some serious money for the things you want to buy. I agree with Andrewas in that you should never sell anything of use to you just for money, because by half way through the game, you'll have gold coming out of unpleasant orifices. So try to hang on to things like the ring of wizardry and the ankheg armour. Other than that, just make sure you earn lots of experience in easy places to get you and your party stronger

Fella, I wished that you had mentioned it before you sold them, as I think universally here, we would've said keep 'em. The ankheg armour alone is a good "find". At the beginning, you can't afford to buy plate armour for all those that can wear it, so this takes some of the burden off of you. The ring of course allows more magic missiles, and that is good enough on it's own. Trust me.

Er no no no NO. I didn't sell that ankheg armor or the ring. I knew better than that. you all just read it so fast you didn't see that i sold "a few items" that I didn't specify. The one thing you can find to sell is that Star Sapphire for 1000 gold.

Whoops. Sorry about that, but the way your wrote it it was ambiguous.

What else could have given you problems? You may have been to low a level. I would recomend level 3, level 2 minimum. But its possible to get there at level 1. Leveling dosent improve your combat ability that much (except for mages) but it does give you extra HP which are far more important.

Or you might not have been using the right tactic. Hidden thief scouting (cept for that *damn* bridge on level three, when you need detect traps on), then the main group attacks with whatever tactical advantage you can get. Of course you need to put a fair few points into Hide in Shadows for that to be viable. Its easier with a protagonist thief since you can distribute your points to your liking.

Or, my way, a decent Tank in your best armour, large shield, boots of avoidance (I think you can get them before nashkel, not 100% sure) and draw out the kobolds any way you can.

Theres a ring of "protection from normal missiles" in DSotSC, does anyone know if its in regular BG as well? Some dwarven merchant in the bassilus sector. Anyway, if you can get your hands on that little beauty you can ignore all except kobold commando's arrows.

Of course, its all academic now, but learning to use these kinds of tactics (and loads more, I am rusty on BG1 tactics and items) will save you lots of reloading in future battles.

Hey guys maybe he just DOES suck...Just kidding there n00body...it took me a while to get the swing of things to and believe me once that you find your own style of play then the game is going to become both easier and more enjoyable for you...also do not think of this forum as a see all end all to BG/TOSC...sure you can get tons of good info here but don't try to play everybody elses game and just play yours.

Sound advice from Mr. Underhill. As the guys have said, play your own game, and develop your own methods through trial and error. Most of the guys and girls here on the forum have some previous RPG experience I would imagine; I know I certainly do, and I kept getting trashed at BG when I first started. (Mind you, I get trounced a lot now so go figure!)

Caution is the watchword in the mines. You can tackle it a level 1 and get through it. Once you get a decent feel for the game, you will most probably take out the kobolds with your own missile weapons, long before they become a problem to you. It just takes time.

They are found on Nimbul, who attacks you after the mines.

if you wade in on boss fights or in some dungeon areas your likely to die fast, the best way is thief in shadows or person with boots of speed once you get them, they can lead the monsters into your way of playing, if vs mages lots of walls and range to use, if vs arrows the same, if vs tank melee creatures try and seperate them, or use 5 on 1 whilst you use the fast char to lead the others off following him fruitlessly, repeat this till they are all dead, makes all major fights pretty easy, obviously summoning monsters helps immensly as they are immune to most of the spells like dire charm that really get annoying and can do damage to mages or archers, plus just generally distract the enemy while you enjoy safety from the back, vs daveorn for example (after dispatching the two hard doom knights or whatever they were using top tactic) i sent in 5 skeletons who used up all his magic as he portalled about, my thief was watching it all in shadows, he used up all his spells and the final one was monster summoning of quite powerful monsters, so they ripped up my skeletons but by that time a few dread wolves and a mage with no spells left werent a problem for a group of 6 seasoned veterans end of the combat id only taken major hits from the doom knights in melee and noone was near death.
