Just remembered another story of wacky airport security. This was back in October of last year, if I remember right. A teenager was taking a flight and when security went through his bag they found a book called 'Hayduke Lives!' For those unfamiliar with it, it is the sequel to 'The Monkey Wrench Gang', both books are a fictional account of 4 "environmental warriors" liberating parts of Utah and Arizona from evil road-builders, miners and rednecks. The book fueled a new generation of angry young environmentalists (such as Earth First!) practicing monkey-wrenching, sabotage for the sake of protecting the wilderness.

Well the cover of 'Hayduke Lives!' happens to have a cartoon drawing of a large beard guy holding up bundles of dynamite. This gets the kid not one but three interrogations and of course he missed his flight. When he returned the next day to try and catch a flight (this time he packed a Harry Potter book) an eagle-eyed bag checker recognized him from the day before and he was subjected to more 'screening' missing his flight once more. Eventually he made his flight, after changing airlines.

So watch what you read!

It's the main reason I refuse to fly nowadays.

Terrorists don't scare me that much. It's the security that scares the bejesus out of me!

i gotta agree with some of the opinions here. bureaucreacy (sp?) is the main problem here. nobody would be THAT stupid as to confiscate a toy gun of 2! inches. but they do so in fear of losing their jobs. paranoia has gone global. they make you feel almost like a criminal in airports right now. if you have a scrappy look, or carry "dangerous" literature youre in for trouble. backpackers beware! take the train, its cheaper and more fun!!! Well, I'll just walk in there with a loaded Colt 1911, and a Browning M1919 strapped to my back with a standard 200 round belt. I'll bet a few would get pissed off, or scared. Seriously, if I did that, they'd HAVE to let me through, because there's the simple litigation of blood and iron, you get in my way, I kill you! Of course, I'd simply do it for the sake of seeing if I could.

I have little personal experience of the improved security at US airports but surely, if you did this, it would be you that died.
