Fellow gamers,

I have been engaging in some experimentation with treasures. Most of you already know that some treasure locations are randomized and some are fixed. Well, I have been trying to get the random treasure sites to yield up different goodies, but have been having no luck, so far.

What I have been trying (that doesn't seem to work) is going to treasure sites that I know should be random, saving the game, opening the goody box and examining the contents. Then if I don't like what I see, I reload game and open box again: same contents. So I tried going back to a save before I killed the creatures or disarmed the trap that was guarding goody box: still get same contents.

Anyone know how far to go back, or what technique to use (other than Dalekeeper) to get the contents of a "random" treasure location to change?

The random items are generated when the area loads for the first time. So for example if you want to see what random item you get inside the orc cave at the beginning of the game, you'd have to reload outside the entrance where the wolves are. If you reload inside the area, the item will not change.

On a similar note, if you want to fight more monsters, but not necessarily harder monsters, you can have the game set on Insane difficulty when the area loads and then reset it back to normal. More monsters are generated but their HP's and stuff will be normal.

Darkman,

Thanks!

So, if I want to "re-randomize" the treasures in BWT3 (the third level of Black Wolf Temple, a.k.a. "Kresselack's tomb"), is it sufficient to reload a saved gave from where my party was on BWT2, or must I reload a game from where my party has not yet entered the first level of the temple?

The random tables are actually set when you enter the area/level in question. So the treasure table for the 3rd level of "Black wolf, temple", Kresselack's tomb, is set when you enter that specific level for the FIRST time, and not when you enter that tomb complex.

Random item generators are .2da files that load things into containers. The container has the "item" that is a random item, then the game picks an item from the appropriate list. With Infinity Explorer and Excel (or Near Infinity) you can locate a container, change the random item in the container, or change the items chosen on a random item list.
I haven't done this myself, but the hypothesis is sound. I suppose I should test it out, yes?

Azred,

If you do try out that theory, let me know if it works.

Now I have another reason to reinstall IWD/HoW. How much longer can I hold out until I have to "go back north"? Probably not much longer, like this weekend....

Azred,

do yourself a favour and install TOL as well. It cleans up a lot of little annoying item bugs and a few minor dialogue string errors as well. AND from all that I have seen, it runs faster in some areas that previously gave trouble - like burial isle.

You mean I won't be able to formulate my own paint, paint the apartment, rearrange all the furniture, and write a novel while I go from point 'a' to point 'b' at Burial Isle? What will I ever do with the extra time?

ROTFL ... it wasn't THAT slow before .... well, okay, maybe slow enough that rearranging the furniture was possible.
