Hi all,

In playing Icewind Dale, whenever I'm in a room with smoke or fire, my computer slows way down. It never crashes, but movmement speed is reduced until the smoke or fire is no longer visible on the screen.

I assume a patch would take care of this, but I'm not sure. Has anyone encountered this problem? If so, how did you fix it, and if you used a patch, from where did you get it?

Thanks

Welcome to the forums!!

What version are you running now?
IW has some patches on their website but I think they only go up to 1.06. Anything later than that would mean buying HOW I believe.

Thanks for the welcome!

I'm actually away from my home computer right now, so I'm not sure about the version. I do however, already have heart of winter. I bought the deluxe version that had both the original and the expansion included.

It helps to defrag the hard disk and remove unused saved games to help speed things up a bit. It worked wonders for me (in addition to a system utility program to clean up the registry etc.).

Don't forget to download the free IWD area ("undead" castle)...
I just came up with an idea to use a specific item in TotL:
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
I won't tell you what or where, but it will allow a fighter to fight inside the following three (3) spells going on at the same time [non-undead only]:

Level 2: Stinking Cloud (unconscious) - 1 turn
Level 5: Cloudkill (poison) - 1 turn
Level 6: Death Fog (acid) - 15 rounds

Reduce enemy saves between tossing the above spells at them:

Priest: Curse, Prayer, Recitation
Mage: Greater Malison, Lower Resistance
Etc.

You can also summon some undead to distract them (since they wont get hurt by the 3 spells too)

OUCH!!!

Well, I've downloaded Trials of the Luremaster, and I'll see how well that works. Thanks for the help.

"Undead" castle...

I just call the Trials of the Luremaster (TotL) that since most creatures tend to be just that in this area.

Actually not as many as in some other IWD areas like vale of shadows or severed hand
