Yep. Point to remember:
Nalia's primary class is mage - so she can continue to advance to the higher spells. Aeria's primary class is cleric - so her mage spells will never get any better... |

I believe Aerie is multi-class, which means she will improve in both classes (albeit slower) at once.

3 Mages seems like one too many to me.
I like to have both Nalia and Imoen (once she becomes available again) in my party. Nalia is my primary mage and Imoen is my thief and secondary mage. The great thing about having 2 mages is being able to cast multiple Breach spells against high level mages. After your 2 mages both have the Simulacrum spell, you can make that 4 mages!!!! I |

GO with at least 2 mages, and then create a new character (fighter class) specialize him/her in ranged weapons... when the fighter gets to level 9, dual him/her into a mage.
That's the biggest baddest combo you can have... bow weapons for the little people - spells for the bad dudes. |

Get a fourth- Edwin. He has 18 intelligance, meaning he can learn any number of spells. Also, he is only single class so he advances only as a mage, faster than jan or aerie, Right up until either u ditch him, or he reaches the XP cap (which can apparently be removed). So you should get Edwin as your main offensive mage. BUT NEVER HAVE JUST EDWIN AS YOUR MAGE HE IS A CONJURER AND THUS CANT CAST IDENTIFY.

First time I finished the game, I had ME (Mage) Minsc, Sir Anomen, Valygar, Imoen, and Nalia. I wouldn't have Edwin in my party if he came in 17th level with every spell in the game memorized!

I like the idea of having 3 mages in a party, but that takes up space, heres my party in this order
Me (Illusionist) Minsc (ranger) Keldorn (paladin) Jaheria (fighter/Druid) Yoshimo (getting Jan soon, anyway hes a thief) Anomen (fighter/cleric) Personally I like to have just one Illusionist, since I rarely use necromancy spells, and also, don't forget to have some clerics! Mages can't be your only best casters, Clerics have some nasty offensive ones as well (like the Gate Spell, one word of warning before using this. CAST PROTECTION FROM EVIL OR YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!) Anyway back to the mage: Yes and I agree with Lucre's comment about 3 mages being overkill, just imagine 3 mages casting Delayed Blast Fireballs (Ouch!) and casting Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting (YIKES!!, although I never casted myself but I saw Irencius, this is in chapter 4 casting this on me and demiloshed me), so in my opinion, just stick with 1 or 2 mages not 3 since you need clerics and tanks also.

i think the perfect party should have 2 mages, a fighter, a ranger, a druid, cleric and a thief
