Are console RPGs too dumbed down?

I recently played Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance on the PS2, and I was very disappointed. A party of one character? No strategy to battles, just repeated button bashing?? What the hell were they thinking?

Dark Alliance is.. well... cr*p. I would stick to PC rpg's, or pencil and paper.

Yeah I think you're right! I was expecting something like Baldurs Gate 1/2, Icewind Dale or Planescape Torment... and it was nothing like that.

Has anyone played Summoner? I found that disappointing too, but for different reasons.

True, but even they arent as good as they used to be. I loved FF7, but felt the demo to FF10 was too bizarre to buy.

I had Final Fantasy 2 on game boy years ago, and it got me hooked, but I still think you should stay with PC rpg's or pencil and paper

It was sweet! but it was on gameboy so I grew out of it. It had a good storyline aswell, well I thought so... when I was 13 It was the second RPG I ever played, the first being 'the Bard's Tale' - which I still have on my PC

Console RPG's just don't exist. There are none. Allthough the Final fantasy crowd may disagree with me but FF wasn't really an RPG. Console 'RPG's' are Diablo clones or something similar. Not much role playing going on.

The bards tale, one of the greatest crpgs ever made I think, and a big influence on my rpg Im developing (check my web site, if your interested!). I recently downloaded an Amiga emulater and the Bards Tale 3, and Im working my way through that, what a classic!
