This just poped into my head. I have a friend we have nothing in common, well not harly anything, we agure about everything, the thigns he loves I hate.
Yet he is still one of my closest friend. What keeps is friends, I wonder. Dont get me wrong, I am glad to have such a good friend and all that sappy stuff. But its strange you know? On the other hand, I have a friend who likes alot of the same thing I do. We listen to realtivly the same music, both play DnD, yet I hardly ever speak to him. People can be quite wried,eh

quote: The first friends sounds like me and Azurewolf, we agree on absolutely NOTHING, except for one or two issues, but we're perfectly good friends anyway, strange. What makes a friend a friend, to me it'd have to be someone who's there to cheer you up when you're down and that respects you even if he doesn't agree with you. Those are to me two of the most important things, there are more and I'll try to add some of them later. |

You'd be surprised how many of your friends are nothing like you? I have a friend who is almost a complete opposite. She likes certain things that I hate. She's talkative, i'm quiet. Still she's always there when I need to talk about something, and vice versa. So you're not the only wierd person Grand Ranger.

Loyalty is the most important thing to me. I've had a lot of people who I believed to be friends, but they let me down in the end. Only about six or seven of them have proven to be true friends - and not surprisingly, these are the only people I really trust now. I find it important to have intelligent friends, too. I simply cannot stand to be around stupid people. Also crucial is that my friends are spiritually rich, I care nothing for material wealth, but do expect that they do really have a personality.

What makes a friend a friend in my book is that he/she is there to talk and listen, helps you as they can, doesn't judge you, and has a agreable personality to yours, long list i know.

I'll have to agree with Arledrian and go with Loyalty.
My group of friends from college run the gamut of beliefs (both political and religious). Some I agree with completely and some I disagree with completely. The rest fall somewhere in between. But I know if I ever needed anything from any one of them, they would be there in a heartbeat. Like the commercial says "It doesn't get any better than that."

There's a part of me that is common with each of my friends. So we tend to talk about different things, depending on whom I'm chatting with at the moment.
I actually draw quite a distinct line between close friends and normal friends. In general, friends are those I can relate to (either because we have the same temperament or have some common interest). But for someone to be considered a close friend, he or she would have to be trustworthy (can keep secrets for as long as necessary), non-judgemental, sympathetic and supportive. Pretty stringent criteria, I have to admit, which is why I have only a handful of close friends [ 01-20-2002: Message edited by: mistral4543 ] |

I agree with everyone here. I think that what makes a friend a friend is that they accept you with all of your shortcomings and strengths. They respect you and listen to you. When things are down, they help to cheer you up. I've seen a lot of people that say they have a lot of friends, but when things are their worst, that's normally when you find out who really is there as support, and who disappears. More often than not, the one person to stand beside you when you need someone the most, is the least likely person you would consider a friend.
