This one is aimed at people who are unfamiliar with Dungeon Craft. If you don't know what DungeonCraft is, its a game that is being created in the style of the old SSI Dungeons and Dragons Goldbox games, and its successor FRUA (Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures) which let you design your own goldbox-style games. The FRUA game drew a modest fan base, and people were making and distributing games (and even hacking the code to make more options available, as the "unlimited" part was still fairly limiting...)

Now, DungeonCraft is already better than what FRUA was, and is going to be what FRUA should have been all along... Its got more options and better control over the adventure making process, its being made by an awesome programmer who takes the suggestions of the people and makes them happen, and features much better art capabilities. Best of all, its 100% FREE!!!!

To get an idea of what DC is, check out the web sites (and Download it, if you want):

http://uaf.sourceforge.net/

Now, the current art contest is for character combat icons, but if you check out the screenshots you can see that there's more artwork available (pretty much every sound and visual component is customizable).

any questions you have will be answered by our friendly quarterstaff No, seriously, feel free to ask any questions you may have.

couple of questions, as I really liked gold box games but thought FRUA was defunct by the time I heard about it. I had no idea it had an online community until recently, which actually brought me to this site a bit before I joined up.

Have you seen different worlds that were created in goldbox style - like that Spelljammer game, or those Buck Rogers games made? Dark Sun, Dragonlance, or Greyhawk?

And, are there 3rd edition games by any chance?

I'll have to check this out more when I'm not at work

yeah, I remember seeing the Buck Rogers games. they were made with a similar game engine that the Goldbox games used. DungeonCraft has the potential to do Fururistic games, but currently as its a work in progress the fantasy and 2nd edition basic Dnd rules are hard coded into the engine (basic as in no specialty classes yet). As for 3rd edition, this may be possible later, but I wouldn't bet on it soon.

PS and I'm a big fan of FRUA, and DC is bigger/better IMHO

Well that's cool. The second edition is very playable. The interesting thing about the Buck Rogers game was that it's based on what's called the "d20" system. There are literally dozens and dozens of these systems, of which Dungeons and Dragons was of course the most popular. Buck Rogers had the setting, the weapons, classes, and monsters to make a full goldbox import, and I really liked the first one (couldn't get the second to work).
