Whenever I try to download something, access most programs or move a file, I get an error saying that there is not enough space on the disc to perform the task, yet I have well over two gigabytes of HD space left! What's wrong and how do I fix it?

Thanks.

Try running scandisk. Windows does not check to see how much space is free - it just believes what the disc record says. scandisk will correct that if its wrong. Although 2Gb is excessive.

Also clean out c:\windows\temp. Leave that alone for too long and it will exceed one gigabyte in orphan'd files.

Have you divided your HD into seperate partitions by chance? Another possibility is your Temperary Internet Files. It has a set size limit to it, and if you've exceeded the limit you'll receive that error message. Under IE6 properties choose Delete Temporary Internet Files and you should be good to go.

Another possibility is your Virtual Memory could be too small. If you let Windows manage it you wont have to worry about getting "Not enough memory" warnings but you might have to defrag a little more often. It depends on how much RAM you have as to whether you want a larger Virual Memory or not.

If you have 512 meg RAM or more than you dont need a very large Virtual Memory. Generally VM should be set to no more than 25% of the size of the HDD. If you have a 40gig HDD then you really dont even need 10 gig of VM. Large swapfile size can adversely effect performance.

There is a program that will help you get rid of temporary internet files and other things. Window Washer can be found (at least I'm pretty sure you can still get it there) www.tucows.com I highly recommend it.
