I just did a huge system tweak.
went into mscfg and shut stuff off, corrected my registry, dowloaded new drivers for everything imaginable and tweaked my virtual memory and swap file. My question is , how much ram can I allocate to the swap file?? I know it is supposed to be 2.5 x the system ram, but how much is too much?? I have 680 megs of ram buss ram , but useing that formula I will end up with 1500 megs in the swap file!! Thats sounds like WAY too much to me. If it makes a difrence I have a 40 gig HD. Can anybody help?

How do you have 680 megs of Rambus? With Rambus you have to build up in parity.
Anyways, if you have over 500 megs of any kind of ram, I'd just disable the swap file entirely. Realistically you probably don't need it.

First, your swap file should be about 25% of the overal size of the drive TOPS If you have a 40 gig hard drive you really dont need 10 gig of swapfile. Yes you could disable it altogether but I would have at least some swapfile in case you end up needing it. Better to have some than none IMO.
If you have your 40 gig partitioned then your swap file should be no more than 25% of the biggest partition. Make sure htat whatever size you make it the numbers are the same. IE Largest size 1000 meg .... smallest size 1000 meg... This helps keep your computer from fragmenting too badly. I have a 20 gig partitioned into two 10 gig drives. I also have 640 meg of ram and a 2 gig swapfile. Dont really know if itll make any difference but Ive been thinking of cutting the swap file to 250 meg and see how it performs. My comp runs fine as it is but Im always into learning what I can make it do
