I'm new to Icewind Dale and 3rd edition, I was just getting ready to make my first party and was looking for suggestions as far as class, race and any multi-classing.

if you really dont know what to play and what you prefer you should read a FAQ. answers here on this questions would be overwhelming.

In general terms, try to get a balanced party containing a couple of front line fighters (paladin, fighter, or barbarian). Add in a cleric for healing and for use as a secondary tank. Some rogue capability is essential but can mixed with a another class to augment your range of spell casting or fighting capability. Then add an arcane spell caster (mage or sorceror). Make sure you have a good mix of melee and ranged weapons, AND of various weapon types (piercing, slashing and blunt) for each character.
A basic party would look like this: Human Paladin Dwarven Fighter Elven Rogue Human Cleric Elven Mage Elven Druid or Ranger or Bard (my preference is for the Ranger) High level monks make great front line fighters when they get high enough in level. At low levels they require some care. Dual classing possibilities abound, some options to consider are: Dual class the rogue to mage Dual class the Ranger to a Druid Dual class the Paladin to a fighter My preference is to NOT dual class from a cleric or mage as I WANT those 9th level spells - at least not before I go into Heart of Fury mode. Pay CLOSE attention to favoured class restrictions. There are just too many options to go through all of them in detail. Strive for a balanced mix and go with what appeals to you. There is no RIGHT answer.

Thank you for your input Micah. Here is what i've come up with.
Human Paladin Human Ranger dualed to a theif for backstab Human Cleric Dwarf Fighter Elf Sorcerer Human mage with theif abilities ie lock pick detect trap I think that should be pretty balanced, if you think I am lacking anywhere let me know.

Looks pretty good.
I would have made the mage an elf (favoured class and higher dex). Dualing the ranger to a thief for backstab is a clever idea - if you alternate levels between the two classes you could consider making that class elven as well for the dex boost. Those are just nitpicks however. That party is definitely playable and has no obvious gaps in it. I'm going to try these I think:
1/2 Orc Cleric (Tempus) - tank, healer, summoner Human Fighter(4)/Monk(X) - quick tank 1/2 Elf Fighter(3X)/Ranger(X) - searches for traps Wild Elf Sorcerer(2X)/Rogue(X) - disarms traps; leader Moon Elf(?) Wizard Ghostwise Halfling, Barb(1)/Druid(X) - lil shaman They are admittedly not optimized to be an ultimate power type party, but they should more than hold their own and be fun to play. They've also got a bit of a wild/outdoors theme going, and maybe 3 characters with elvish blood. Also I wanted to go with no ECL races for a change and try a "feral" hobbit
