I lost my mother in Oct of 1998, to Ovarian Cancer. She was diagnosed two years earlier, but the diease was too far gone to completely treat it.

In the two years she survived, we reasearched constantly, and found that most women do not realize the danger of this disease.

Some facts:
If you live in the US, you have a 2% chance of contracting this form of cancer sometime over your lifetime.
The chances go up drastically as you age.
If you have never had children, you are in a high-risk group.
If anyone in your family has had ANY type of cancer, you are in a high-risk group.
Your regular tests at your OB/GYN (sp?) DO NOT test for ovarian cancer. (A pap-smear tests for cervical cancer. My mothe was tested 3 weeks before her ovaries burst.

Earlier this year, the President of the US officially declared September as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. (I know that I'm late.)

Please, look into this. If I can help ONE person become more aware, my mother's death would not be in vain.

Thanks for the info, RudeDawg. I'll look into getting checked out.
My mom died from cancer, too. Took 14 yrs to kill her. She had breast cancer, had a radical mastectomy, and chemo and radiation therapy, but eventually it spread throughout her body. She didn't tell anyone for years, and lived alone and worked till she was over 70, looked after herself, her house, her garden, right up until 2 weeks before she died. I looked after her those final 2 weeks - but I was a mature student at university and my 2nd yr exams were during those 2 weeks. She insisted I took them, so I did. The day of my last exam, I returned to her home (I was staying there) and found her with two McMillan nurses. They had just fitted her with a drug pump to kill the pain. She had apparantly refused to have it fitted, or have nurses, until my exams were over, so that I should not be too upset to take the exams.
Great woman, my mom.

I lost my grandmother in 1981 to breast cancer. She was only 74, and had fought the dread disease for eight years...a monumental task in that day and age. I remember being torn about the grief of losing her, and the relief that at last she was no longer suffering.

Regular examinations and early detection are the key to catching this illness and defeating it successfully. There are still forms of cancer which are deadly from the onset, but in more cases than not, an early diagnosis and treatment can knock it out with little chance of recurrence. Point: please don't put off getting something checked out that you are unsure of. It could very well save your life.

I imagine that anyone over 40 should get regular (6 month) checkups.

However, being that there are young people who get cancer as well, doing a self-test (breast examination, etc, looking for "lumps") is well-advised. Get your doctor to show you how to conduct this; you can do it in the shower or before you get ready for bed.

Personally, I'd say you were never too young to start. I'd rather be paranoid and alive, than "cool" and dead.
