Those are two different things (and I can know, I study History ). In Ancient Greece, the spears were indeed the favored weapons. However, the hoplites used throwable spears (indeed the one handed spears Timothy Trotter is talking about). In close combat, these spears could be used as well to thrust towards an enemy.
In later times, the introduction of the (Macedonian) phalanx, the whole concept of spearbearers (that's what the word "hoplite" means in Greek) changed. The spears became much longer and could not longer be used with one hand. Both hands were necessary to carry the spear, which was usually 4 metres long. Those spears were indeed used in pike walls, forming a virtually unstoppable group of soldiers.

It would be funny to have a bunch of out-of-character characters in it. For example, there can be a paladin at a table, and when asked for advice says something like "I'm a paladin. I need strength, dexterity, and constitution, and I have a high minimum on wisdom and charisma. Guess which stat I dropped to 3?". the discusssion could go on with his Paladins Are Dumb stereotype, or Keldorn can modestly say that he is quite smart, to wich the paladin replies: "Yea, you're smart, but that's because you're a roleplaying pansy! I mean, 9 dexterity? come on! I once solo'd a sorcerer with better combat stats then you! Why do you think the PC would ever be a paladin? Cause they'd be better than you!" (no offense meant to roleplayers)
