I really like playing a Cavalier as my main character. Aside from being a great main tank, and possessing many useful immunities and inate abilities, there is some really good equipment you will come across later in the game.

My next favorite is the kensai/ mage. If I were to play the game without a party, this would be the guy (memorizing knock). The Kai ability is unsurpassed.

You will NEED a mage in the game somewhere, but you can pick up several NPCs that will work fine. You are about to embark upon one of the best computer RPGs of all time. Take your time and enjoy it (and quick save a lot).

Well, I still haven't finished my first game, but I had several 'trial runs' but I settled on my current leader.
I chose a Cleric, because, simply, I wanted a good healer (I'm a bit of a hack&slash player :fight.
HOWEVER, as they advance in level, Clerics get some EXCELLENT offensive spells, which makes her better than my lower-level dual & multi Mages (she is lvl 20 at present while Aerie & Imoen are around lvl 13).
So, although I lack the experience of playing with a High level mage (Next time!) I can definitely recommend a Cleric for a new player. Just make sure you give him/her 18 Wisdom plus as high as you can Strength and Constitution. DON'T settle for less than 90 total score on you Ability Rolls at character creation!

I don't really think that there is a *right* class to play for your first game. If you had a look at the manual, and thought 'Oh man, a monk, I'd love to try that,' then that is the right class for you.

Just make sure that when you're generating your character you read all the info on all the classes, races and stats to make sure you get the best out of whatever you pick. Some classes can only be played by humans (Paladin) and some races get bonuses and penalties to their stats which make them more suited to some classes than others. There are no strict rules about it though, just go with whatever feels best to you!

Bear in mind that multi-class characters take longer to gain more abilities/spells as the experience points you earn are split between each class, so for your first game I would advise picking a single class character.

On the question of *my* preference, I like Bards best - they can do a bit of lots of things, without being specialised in any one area. The Blade kit is better at fighting with 2 swords at once, the Skald is a better all-round fighter, and the Jester has special types of song which cause different things to happen to enemies.
