Hi all,
What is the easiest way to gain the identify ability (besides going for Warlock)? I do have a level 7 Oliphant Mage, but I have read here that I should get him up to level 11 or 12 before ascending to Warlock. The reason given was so that he has as many Sun and Stone spells as possible. Is there another way to get the identify skill? I am spending all my hard earned money on identifying items instead of other things (like training, special weapons, and role ascensions). I would rather not resort to exploiting the gold bug, but I guess if that is my only option I will... Anyone with some advice? Thanks! frosty |

Ascend in the guild to get Ancient Lore then Artificats and increase the level as you gain levels. That will save you $.
(If you're hard pressed for gold there are quite a few ways which can fix that |

Raise your GUILD level by doing their quests! This is a must to gain the ability to identify items! (doing guild quests is important for all the guilds!)
Good Luck! Wyv |

I have done just about all the guild quests in Valeia (except probably the most important one in order to gain the Identify skill and that's for the Mage Guild...killing a serpent priest or some such individual).
After finishing a quest to rise in the guild do I just train at the guild for the Ancient Lore and Artifacts skill then? Thanks for the help. frosty |

Basically. When you get to sufficient level in the Wizards Guild (IIRC), you can learn Ancient Lore. Once you gain that trait, you can start working on the Artifacts skill, which lets you identify items.
It also helps when someone gets merchant. Without merchant, you might as well just sell something; the cost to identify is exactly equal to the extra GP you get for knowing what you're selling. The exception, of course, is if you can identify more than one thing. Then you get the bonus GP on all after the first one. With merchant, the cost is less, so it always pays to identify. Blacksmith/Forge is also something you want to pick up early. I had one wizard pick up everything, identify it, and give it to one of the warriors, who would repair it and give it to the rogue, who'd sell it. A pain, but it maximized GP.
