hmmm, i read fantasy books (the one that sparks my interest) i have read David Eddings which is ok. Robert Jordan (no offense) but his books are getting waaaaaayyyyyyyy (understatement) boring for me. heck i cant even recall what is going on anymore. the only novel which i found nice was SWORD OF TRUTH SERIES (by terry goodkind) its cool. Dune and Lord of the RIngs is also good. The Mercedey Lacky (is that the right spelling?) is also good. . that just my opinion but you can get something out of those books right? heh .
like someone said, post a sample (and let us criticize) btw: what is the title of your first two books?

I read fantasy. All the time Its my fav genre, and I'll read any fantasy that I can get my hands on.
Is the genre waning? I never heard anything about this. I sincerely hope not... |

I read R.A Salvatore, which I think is quite good (although a commen criticism now is "You've read one Salvatore Battle Sequence, You've Read 'em all"). I also read Dune.
Look, Off Topic a bit, but I recommend 'The Day of The Jackel' to EVERYBODY! It starts slow, but it gets excellent. Much better than both the films, and no Bruce Willis!

Yes, I read fantasy and I'm in my 40s. Is the fantasy genre' becoming passe'. No. It still sells millions. Is it as fun as it was in the 70s and early 80s. No. It has become repetitive which leads to boredom. Thus, I rarely pick up a fantasy work anymore. I loved Robert Jordan's first 4 to 5 works of his WoT series, but as someone already said it is way too long. The formula is worn to a fray but keeps going with different names and locations. The genre' is in trouble not due to the selling point but due to the creativity point, plus mediocre writing at best. Sorry if this steps on someone's toes but R. A. Salvator, David Eddings, and Weiss and Hickman belong are mediocre talent, yet they are held by many as the best of the best.
Do us all a favor Mallagar and do something fresh. Something that isn't a clone. A new formula perhaps. Here is what I mean: Jack Vance's Lyonesse trilogy, Stephen R. Donaldson's Thomas Covenant series, H.P. Lovecraft, Glen Cook, Fritz Leiber (this man was genius). These writers knew or know how to break from old paradigms and forge new ones. Lovecraft created a whole new dimension unlike anything that had gone on before or since! Pick up writings from the 40s, 50s, and 60s as well. Ever read John Bellairs "The Face in the Frost"? If you can find it do so. Talk about different. What I am trying to get at is that we need something new but I think it will be a difficult, uphill task. |

aren't most books fantasy ? Anyway, i like "kicked in the butt by love" written by Velvet Jones. I never read it, cause it probably doesn't excist, but i like it anyway since i heard Eddy speak about it.
