I also agree. As it is, video games and other sorts of entertainement, read wrestling, come under fire all the time. Here's a novel idea, parents should try to educate their kids and take responsibility for it and not put to blame on something else.

I do tend to agree with you guys for th emost part. However, as anyone who has played Eq qil tell you it does tend to become addicitive. I know several peopel who have dropped out of college or quite jobs becsue they got in the way of playing eq. About two years ago there was a case of child neglect broguht on by eq. Appartently, a little girl was ill, i forget it she died of they got to her intime, but he dad was suppose to be takign her to the doctors( since the mother worked in the daytime and he did not) but he never did becasue he wanted the time to play eq He just kept makign up stories to the wife about what the doctor was saying about the kills illness. I know i played eq for about a year and had to stop because i realized I wsa not going out on dates or with friends my social life consisted of eq.

I agree Lanthir.
Headhunter I don't think the womans story can be dismissed. While Eq obviously was not the only reason, it clearly played a part. These things are never cut and dried. Secondly, the story raises valid points about computers and their psychologically addictive potential. There are valid warnings in the article. The key is balance. |

Agreed, I really dont think its completely the mother's fault. It might seem like she's scapegoating Everquest for her son's death, but its probably as much her son's fault as the game.
MMORPGS can get addictive, and some people are just losers..I mean the article clearly states his mother did pretty much whatever she reasonably could for an ADULT man to get on with his life or whatever. Granted it really doesnt seem like she went about them the right way, but I do believe her son should be held accountable for his own actions. He's an adult, he got addicted to living a false, make-believe life, and he shot himself after being ditched by a cyberlover. How sad is that...people should be educated on stuff like this. Its just getting bloody ridiculous. Enter the age of the cyberfreak.. [ 06-04-2002, 03:54 AM: Message edited by: Lifetime ]

It is perfectly laughable that someone is blaming the game on his death. Anyone remember when DnD was the scapegoat? The kid obviously had OTHER problems, perhaps someone is forgetting to mention them. Probably just so she can sue Sony, wouldn't bloody surprise me.

It doesn't appear as though the mother is blaming EQ singularly, but rather the psychologically-addictive nature of many computer-related pastimes. I think she is more distraught over the lack of knowledge/treatment/concern for the detrimental effects (and there are definately some detrimental effects) of computer-addiction than over the game itself. I sure know I can get overly wrapped up in computer stuff, not to the point where I'd be considering suicide, but I guess that sort of thing creeps up gradually. Computer gaming and the commercial internet are very new technologies, introduced only in the last generation or so. It will be very interesting to see what the long-term effects on the way people think and act as a result of the introduction of these technologies into mainstream social life are going to be.

hmm, i have played EQ for a short while. i can tell you guys that it is really an addictive game. but i was downgraded to a 28.8 modem from cable therefor everquest is not exactly a game to play then. but i do have to say that the parent must accept that she is also part of the responsibility. she cant just blame it on the games itself.

Same shite, different decade. When I was a child, I was warned away from comic books because they would 'rot your mind'. Jazz music was once thought to be the downfall of western civilization. Any new thing, especially a form of entertainment, always has its' naysayers and prophets of doom.
This individual life that was lost is indeed a tragedy. It's a sad situation that led to this persons' suicide. Given the fact that he had other influences in his life; depression, epilepsy, shyness, overweight, blaming this on a voluntary pastime is ridiculous. This form of social interaction may have prolonged his life and provided him the kind of relationships that he apparently had difficulty achieving in person. There will always be individuals who fixate on something, gambling, religion, sports, whatever. The cause lies not in the object of the fixation, but in the individuals mind. Our culture has developed a pathetic fixation on finding blame, we seem to feel the need to have a scapegoat for every tragedy, regardless of how little rationality supports it... |
