Other characters can see them, but only a ranger or perhaps a druid can decipher their meaning (who made them, how many of the creatures there are, etc.).

No, 'tis true. Some footprints can be seen by everyone, some can be seen if you're lucky, some can only be seen if you're a ranger (or maybe druid). You also get additional information about the terrain as you go along, or might even be able to speak with certain animals.

that was true in the expansion oc. Stands to reason that if it were true there, it should be true, game wide. IMHO, but I haven't had a ranger anywhere where I could test that theory.

I know some modules use the Rangers tracking, but that's done completely with scripting and is a part of the plot.

I used a ranger in SOU and she could see tracks and tell which direction they went /what creature made them.
My cleric in my current game (an elf) sees very few of the tracks and guesses that something went by, but has no details. My bard (human) sees some of them and gets mimimal info, sometimes just that they are tracks! LOL

I am currently playing through with a ranger and I am loving some of NWN's touches! If I click on footsteps it will say, one I remember, something like this for example:
"You see some footprints in the snow, they seem to be made by a large group of gnolls, perhaps 15 - 20 of them. There are also some smaller footprints which seem to belong to kobolds, perhaps prisoners? It looks as though they headed east at the clearing ahead" It really adds some reality to the class of beng a ranger! I love being able to talk to animals as well! Could you do that before SOU? I never played ranger in NWN. So far I've spoken to dogs, chickens, oxen, wolves and bats! Great Fun!!!
