What happens if you're an archer and you have 3 slots in long bow. Then you dual to a thief and place 1 in long bow. When you achieve your archer status do you have 4 slots in the bow or 3?

3. Dual classing gives the best benefit from either class, not cumulative benefits.

Yes - and this has a very important consequence for dual classing.

Once you dual class, your current proficiences are removed temporarily. Until you reach a level higher that the level of your old class, you will be a pure "new class" character without any benefits of the old class. When your level in the new class becomes higher than the level in your old class, all abilities of the old class will be reenabled and you become a dual class character able to take advantage of both his classes. Your abilities will be evaluated on the basis "best of(old class, new class). An example:

If you have a level 8 archer with +++ in long bows and dual to a thief, you will be a pure thief until you reach level 9. Suppose you had invested + in long bows during your thief career. At level 9, you become a dual class archer/THIEF and you get +++ for the bows because +++ = best of(archer, thief) for bows. Since now, you can improve your long bow further (you are an archer now so that you can place 5+ into bows) but the + from the pure thief period is lost.

Always think twice which proficiences to give a future dual class character before dualling!
Try never to place proficiences as shown in the example above!
Always keep in mind that you will be a "pure class" after dualing temporarily - with all restrictions of your new class.

In the orther words, proper placing proficiences for a future dual class character is a bit of science You must select such skills in the old class which will not interfere with your planned new class (under the restrictions of the old class). Then you will dual. Now, you must place proficiences in the skills not selected in the old class. These proficience will not vanish because best of(old class, new class) = best of(0, new class) = new class. But you must keep in mind that you will do it under restrictions of your new class. Finally, you become a dual class, all your abilities will be reenabled, and all your problems become a history

Radek covered pretty much everything, but there are a few details I should point out:

- Unless you've installed the patch/MOD that makes the Archer kit available to Fighters (as well as Rangers), an Archer cannot Dual to a Thief.

- Thieves cannot use, or place proficiency stars in, Long Bows.

- After regaining your 1st class's abilities (and weapon stars), you can indeed add to those proficiencies--but be aware that you gain new weapon stars at the rate of your second class. If you Dualed from Fighter to Mage, you can still put points into Halberd, but only at the rate of 1 star per 6 Mage levels.

- For some reason, the game will let Dualed Clerics put points into Slashing and Piercing weapons. If you Dual-class a Cleric to a Ranger, the game will let you put stars into things like Bastard Swords. But when you try to actually equip a Bastard Sword, you won't be able to, as Clerics are forbidden to use such weapons.

Thanks guys, and btw Six I do have the mod for the generic archer. Dualling him to a thief would make a good powerhouse with the HLA's. What do you think about a mage though. The thing I thought that would make the combo nice is that he would be able to fire masses of arrows in between spell casting. Other than that I can't think of any reason why, other than maybe no one has (solo).

Personally, I think that would be fine for a solo game, but too overpowered for a 6-person party. Everyone knows how strong the Kensai->Mage is, and an Archer->Mage can only be even more so. A plain old Fighter->Mage is fine if you want to combine spells with archery.
