In all fairness, I wouldn't call the engineers who designed these rigs stupid. They are incredible feats of engineering. To be honest, most oil-drilling technology we have represents a tremendous accumulation of ingenuity and knowledge that we have come to possess. The fact of the matter is, when you are drilling at these incredible depths there can be a tremendous amount of uncertainty of what can happen. There is only so much you can design and plan for.

The other issue is that this is good oil essentially gone to waste. Good American oil. The U.S. peaked in it's oil production back in the early 70's, and frankly any domestic spill is a waste of our domestic resources. Especially since this is a very sweet (low sulfur) oil.

Umm.... why this was necessary I have no clue, but I'd put my money on the POTUS vs. you and just about anybody else in a brain-wrestling match.

Well Chewie on that I'll commend you, if you put your money where your mouth is great. Well done! I got no problem with folks who don't want to drill for oil who don't use oil.... it's them that don't want to drill for oil but use it like it's going out of style.... if'n anyone wants to go a completely oil free life great go for it, it won't bother me hey it's your life... besides I won't have to worry about any posts since oil is required for the manufacturing of many computers componets

I don't think the question is whether or not you use it, but rather, whether it is possible to use something else instead? Computer parts can be made without oil.

Less is not none. It doesn't even need to be less if things are made smarter.

Anyway this oil spill is a major bummer, I'll try anything to lighten up the thread a bit, yet remain topical.

lol...so what's the circuitboards going made of wood instead? how about paper... yeah those are good insulators..... Every piece of plastic used comes from oil no matter what it is used for.

Wait, are you saying that in your understanding, computer circuit boards are made from plastic?

sure less is not none, you're right smarter use is the way to go, but there's a price for that also, there's a reason Startrek is called fantasy Chewie at least you're putting your money were your mouth is, that I can respect... I don't care if you're in for a penny or a pound... as long as you're in, you ante-up. I know it can be scary for me to compliment you

You're right it is a bummer, I know this prehaps more then anyone else on the board, I grew up in the panhandle of Florida (Pensacola-Ft.walton Beach) My wife is from Mobile, AL, 20%-25% of my business is done with charteboats out of Orange Beach, AL. All areas that are going to be hit by the slick.... but that's life, nothing in life is easy or free, the whole kit and ka-bootle comes with risks and costs. We can't grow enough soy beans, peanuts or what ever you want to try and grow and harvest it's oil, to be able to replace crude oil. Even if we could grow, come up with something to replace crude oil I'll bet dollars to dounuts there would arise somebody somewhere to complain about the expoltation of that resourse.

They wouldn't have had to drill in 5,000 ft of water if we opened up other areas... but no.. so now the time to pay the piper. Don't mistake understanding that the piper has to be paid for not thinking it's a bummer. Personally I can survive without oil, I don't want too, I'm a country boy I can grow my own food, hunt and fish, collect my own water, build my own shelter without oil if I had too. I can live without tupperware, bottled water, and plastic it would make life tough, but I can do it. Oil is used for so much more then Gas, it touches every aspect of our lives. When and if some replies thier fingers hit plastic keys on their keyboards, the mircowave ovens, the insulation on the wiring in houses, light switches, the pens we use. you name it and crude oil is most likely used in it somewhere somehow.
