Because except for the + to hit, you're getting nothing. Some of them are immune to every other bonus of a racial enemy. So while the + to is nice, and at times there are a lot of undead, you only get 5 selections.

My fav's are (in no particular order):

Vermin - This game has a lot of vermin. But I like it for PnP, too, because Rangers are outdoor characters and vermin are common in wilderness. And can be quite an appropriate choice in "underdark" encounters with drow.

Abberations (mimics, mindflayers, nagas, otyughs, beholders, driders, etc.) are excellent when you're doing "underdark" adventures in large cavern complexes. Also, many of them can be found in urban encounters (beholder cults, mindflayer cults, evil temple guardians).

Dragons (dragons, wyverns, dragon turtles (aquatic based adventures), etc.) are found all the time as they are meta-predators.

Giants (ogres, trolls, giants, ettins, ogre mages) are very common in this campaign and form the backbone, or at least a leg or two, of any persistent campaign.

Humans (lots of "boss" types) are the dominent race. A good choice.

Magical Beasts (phase spiders, basilisks, summoned fiends/celestials, etc.) is a very good choice when you're fighting mages. But is also a good choice because there are a lot of powerful creatures.

The rest of them are either too marginal, or too specialized for most of the game. I even hesitated with Dragons on the above list.

1)undead (They're everywhere!)
2)humans (only evil humans... I am a good character after all)
3)giants (trolls are very annoying)

(Ranger neutral good level 5)

I took humans first.. (I had already finished the beggar's area)

I was willing to bet I'd be running into alot of Humans

And is this something new in the 3rd ed. rules?

I haven't played since the 80s (1st Ed) and all I can remember is being able to choose 1 racial enemy when you rolled your character.

1st ed? You still have your original box from the original boxed set? I wrecked my box in a move and tossed it. Otherwise I've got everything from 1st Ed.

And your Ranger memories (one racial enemy) are correct. This is 3E.

Well, enough. I keep gathering wool like this and people'll think I'm a sheep farmer.
Seems to me that a character didn't raise as high a level too. Wasn't it like 13 or something? And there were limitations on how high a non-human class could go. Something like 6th or 7th in certain classes. The one issue that I did like about Ranger from the 1st edition is that you had MAGIC USER spells, and not DRUIDIC. I only remember 1 racial enemy too, and there wasn't as large a selection as there is today in 3E. I still have the Player's Handbook, DM GUIDE, Dieties & Demigods (With Cthulu & Nehwon Mythos, as well as Elric and his famous sword), Unearthed Arcana, & Tome of Magic. I sold most of the rest to get 2nd edition stuff.

I still even have my D&D boxed set with the chits somewhere around here.

The thing I miss most is demons and demigods and the fiend foilo, they had the best monsters to throw at a high level party!

*sigh I am starting to feel my age and I'm not even 40 yet.....*

Oh yeah, ASMODEUS, right? He was the coolest. Then there was ORCUS. What was the name of that blob? LOL. They had some of the coolest powers and abilities too. You never knew if you would survive them or not. Our DM had to use DIVINE INTERVENTION a couple of times (he rolled up some Natural 20's a couple of times when checking DISINTEGRATION effects). LOL

EDIT: Oh yeah, and the succubus. Man, we never heard the end of it when we had an encounter with one. LOL. Course we were teenagers back then. Everyone kept making suggestive comments back then. God those were good memories.

In all seriousness, Dragons or Giants seem good.
